Since Cantonese uses multiple tones to communicate you must obtain a a basic understanding of sounds and tones. There are a variety of opinions on the amount of tones in Cantonese ranging from 6 to 9 different tones. These exercises work with 7 tones. Most of these tones are based on Cantonese Sounds & Tones by Parker Po-Fei Huang. I would encourage you to purchase the book from:
